Our new coalition government announced that the emergency budget on 22 June would be “tough but fair”. The headlines of the budget included an immediate increase in CGT from 18% to 28% for high earners, and an increase in VAT from 17.5% to 20% in January 2011. From 2011/12 we can expect a 1% reduction in both rates of corporation tax, low earners will appreciate the £1,000 increase in personal allowances, and entrepreneurs see their life time Entrepreneurs’ Relief increased to £5m. However, high earners will not benefit from an increase in capital allowances as this will be offset by a reduction in the threshold for 40% income tax; NIC increase looks set to go ahead but with some dispensations to employers, and middle earners with families look set to lose out on tax credits. All the details are in our Summer Budget Booklet, available for you to download now.

This and all the main 2010/2011 rates and allowances are included in our 2010 Spring budget Summary including details on the 50% tax and personal allowance restrictions on high earners announced last year.
